Alan (Stewart) Paton (1903-1988) South African writer, founder and president of the Liberal Party (1953-68), which opposed apartheid and offered a non-racial alternative to government policy. The party was banned in 1968 by the Prohibition of Political Interference Bill, and Alan Paton was harassed by the racist government.

Alan Paton died in his home in Botha's Hill at the age of 85, on 12 April 1988. His first wife, Dorrie, had died on 23 October 1967. In February 1968 Anne Hopkins started working for him as his secretary. Alan and Anne got on well, and were married on 30 January 1969. In 1967 Doris Olive Paton died, and two years later Alan Paton married Anne Margaret Hopkins. Paton continued to write throughout his life, publishing a third novel, Ah, but Your Land is Beautiful, in 1981 and two of a projected three volumes of his autobiography in 1980 and, posthumously, in 1988.
